Drugs are Nice

A couple quick book reviews:

Drugs are nice: a post-punk memoir by Lisa Carver

“We each pave our own road to hell”, the desperate woman intoned. “Not me”, my father chuckled. “Too much work! I’m a hitchhiker on someone else’s road to hell”

Enjoyed it quite a bit. Can be deperessing at times but gives a window into [...]

Bad Reviews

One of my favorite science magazines is Seed which also hosts a great collection of science blogs. Today, via boing boing, I found out that they are being sued due to a negative book review. Hopefully it turns out well but it is something to keep an eye on.

That said a negative review has been [...]

9/11 Report Graphic Adaption

The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation Rating: 5 out of 5 Author: Sid Jacobson Year: 2006 Publisher: Hill and Wang ISBN: 0809057395 Got this book from the local consortia. Well worth the read. Though I haven’t read the original report the graphic novel adaption is very easy to read and seems to do a very good [...]

Satisficing

I recently finished a book I was reading (Virgin Suicides) and decided to request some of the web development books Amazon has been recommending. They all managed to arrive today and I started with Don’t Make Me Think. It was a nice quick read but it manages to fit a lot of good points. Most [...]

Bird People in China

Well if there’s one good thing about the recent slump in decent offerings from Holly wood it’s my reintroduction to quality cinema from other countries. I know some people hate subtitles but your really short changing yourself if your not seeing some of these movies. I glad the US has imported some recently (Hero, etc) [...]

Flock Browser

I went ahead and tried out Flock. If you haven’t already give it a try. Firefox with a theme and some extra features. It’s geared for people that use the web alot and specifically blog, flickr, etc.You can read a nice indeph review over at PaulStamatiou. My thoughts are that the blog and del.icio.us integration is quite [...]

Video iPod Quality

As I’ve noted I haven’t bought one yet since I don’t have USB2.0 and Firewire is no longer supported. Before it was even shipped though there were already reviews about the iPod Video having a smaller screen then it’s competitors. This is nothing new as there are constant poor reviews because of this or that [...]

VODcasts and iPod Video

Well the iPod Video hasn’t even shipped yet and already people are converting their VODcasts to be iPod friendly or creating new ‘casts altogether. This could bring VODcasts into the limelight as much as the iTunes support did for podcasts.

I haven’t ordered a iPod video yet as there’s no Firewire support and I own nothing [...]

Delivery Services - The Only Thing I Hate About Shopping Online

I love shopping online. The only thing I really buy offline is food and if I lived in an area large enough to have online groceries, I would certainly buy them online too. There is just too much convenience and I just hate the offline shopping experience. There are occasions that I like seeing something [...]

WorldCat and User Editing

As announced elsewhere, WorldCat now supports user additions such as reviews, notes and tables of contents. The original post stated that it was Wiki functionality though I didn’t see that, as others in the comments noted. It’s been updated to stated that it has a Wiki backend and supports Wiki Markup though I don’t see [...]

Mint: Some Tasty Stats

I used to use various stat programs such as AWStats, Webalizer, etc but they were just overkill for what I needed. They also weren’t very nice to look at though the data was comprehensive. Eventually a program called ShortStat came out and I switched to that. It gave me the basic information I needed without [...]

My OS: Gentoo, Debian, OSX Tiger

Update: Noticed some searches coming to this post. If you are looking for Debian tools such as apt-get for OSX then you probably want Fink. If you are looking for Gentoo/portage for OSX then you’ll probably want to take a look at this how-to at the Gentoo Wiki.

Since I’ve reviewed some other things I thought [...]

Gregarius - An Online Aggregator

Back in the early days of RSS I tended to use desktop aggregators as they worked the best. As my job changed and I was switching between work and home computers I found it problematic to have it at only one location. Eventually the web-based aggregators matured and I signed up at bloglines. I was [...]

Why I paid more for the iPod

I have quite a few friends with mp3 players. Some have Creative, some iPods, some others. The ones that have iPods bought them mostly after trying mine. Mine is an old one (Gen 2 i think) that was the first to have the touch wheel. I personally like this more than Gen 3 as the [...]

Google Scholar and The Fury Unleashed

Recently, Google Scholar was unveiled, followed by numerous blog posts about it. The majority of the ones I read were positive and loved the idea, outside of some library related ones. There seemed to be some worry that it destroyed the possibility for federated search at a library. Here is a summary of my opinions.
