Firefox can’t play application/x-mplayer2 embeds

Had this problem with the home computer on Windows. Upgraded WMP but didn’t help. The solution is to install two missing DLL files in the Firefox plugins directory. You’ll likely need to restart Firefox. The DLL’s were:

Was a quick fix for me.

Update: Thanks to commenter’s there looks like there’s some decent information available at the MozillaZine site. They also link to an installer, but that doesn’t apparently work with Vista. If your still having problems check out the mozilla site.

You may want to check your Windows Media Player settings and see if you have it set to open full screen automatically. I had that happen to me once before and it prevented the controls from showing up.

Thanks, this tip was very usefull. I thought it was Windows Vista which created the problem, because changing my firefox browser to the default browser caused also a problem.

Neil. Open Firefox in Windows Explorer and drag and drop the two DLL files into the plugin folder.
It really does work.

HELP!

It seems like lots of people are getting this simple solution to work for them, but alas… I’m not having such luck. Perhaps because I’m on a mac? I’ve downloaded the dll files, but I can’t find ANY plug-in folders anywhere!

Can someone out there help? I’m running Safari and Internet Explorer. I’ve tried to install Firefox, but I can’t move/transfer it off of my desktop, and I can’t find any files to go with it.

Huge thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Stacey: This workaround is for Windows. If your having problems playing Windows Media on OSX you may want to get Flip4Mac which will use Quicktime to play them. However, not all Windows Media formats are available for mac. If a site used one of those then your out of luck. Flip4Mac is at:

http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm

There is also the VLC player which can play many Windows Media files. You can find that for download here:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

And here is information on making it the default player:

Ryan,

I’m not sure what my problem is. I keep getting a window telling me

“this page has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2 , but you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type.”

I also get some messages about shockwave too, although I installed that today.

I really REALLY appreciate your help!

Righteous! Thanks, got my XM going on Vista Ultimate.

Now if I could only find:

1) An XM player that took WinAmp visualizations

or

2) A Vista sidebar XM player

Peace,

For Mac OSX users:

Install Flip4Mac, RealPlayer, or VLC for this problem. RealPlayer worked the easiest for my ibook G4.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Ryan — I can finally watch videos!

But for some reason, big files freeze before the end of the video — real fun!

Any ideas on that one?

Thanks again.

There is a potential SERIOUS security problem with this fix- you need to install a patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-006.mspx

You can read about the problem here:
