ILS Data: Voyager

Again this info is from users/customers and not press releases so may be different for various versions:

Voyager

Export

Built in. Can export Marc with bib, holdings and authorities records, though marc is often mangled.

Database Access

Built in. Uses Oracle and also provides entity-relationship diagrams and some pre-build “views” to help in development. I believe the oracle license is also included in the base price. Access is read-only.

API’s and Web Services

Built in. z39 access, however with SQL access you could likely build the API you need.

Don’t agree with comment that “marc is often mangled”. Have never achieved that personally, nor received such a report locally, and we do a lot of data export (well, more than a lot - a heck of a lot!).

I’ve never used Voyager but a couple people trying to migrate or process the marc with other tools reported the problem. Thanks for the comment though, any other info is welcome.

Voyager’s marc export problems lie mostly in the directory, though double end of field characters and such happen too, and can play havoc with marc toolkits. Places like OCLC would have programmed around this but libraries trying to use development toolkits, like Bas Peters’ marc4j, will likely have experienced grief over this.
