Non-Library Conferences

Alas, getting funding for myself would likely be difficult, but I’m wondering how many tech libs are going to other conferences that are not really library related. Are there ones that standout?

Jaf and reeset were recently enjoying OSCON (and blogging some of it) making most of the rest of code4lib jealous.

Casey will be going to WordCamp a Wordpress oriented unconference and I expect he will be blogging it.

BlogHer is going on right now but I’m not sure if any library bloggers went. A quick look through the names didn’t have any I recognized.

I believe quite a few in code4lib wanted to hit up the RubyConf but I don’t think any made it.

Personally I wanted to hit up a few of the web design related ones but just don’t have the time or money. I will hopefully be at Access this year and Code4lib in the spring.

This year I’ve given a poster at the Texas Music Educators Association annual conference. Finding music at the LC American Memory Project. And a poster at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. That one was about NACO and SACO, informing the scientists about working with thier libraries to get their name and research topics into the LC databases.

But these examples are about us reaching out to other audiances. You were really asking about us learning from others. HOPE (the hacking conference) sounds like fun and OSCON would be nice, but both are very unlikely.

Yes, I was really wondering how many people get funding from their libraries for non-library conferences. My guess is that it’s low. Speaking at them probably makes it a little easier. As libraries start embracing more outside technologies I can see quite a few presenting more. Things like Ruby on Rails and Open Source are starting to take off. Thanks for the info.

[...] Anyway. The BlogHer conference just wrapped up, but as Ryan notes, I don’t know of any library folk who attended. Still, Marianne Richmond is on-blog raising our awareness of DOPA just like a lot of librarians are trying to do. Meanwhile, over at Dooce I found the kind of smart, funny writing that I expected from Bob’s recommendation. [...]

[...] Extra: watch out for Meredith Farkas‘ panel presentation on wikis and enabling library knowledgebases. I should have thought of this in the context of Ryan Eby’s question about librarians going to non-library conferences. [...]
